Featuring Sue Fennessy, Founder of WeAre8
In this week’s episode, we’re joined by Sue Fennessy, Founder of WeAre8 to discuss the ins and outs of creating a social media platform with the highest standards of social and environmental performance.
We first dive into a piece from the BBC about AI swamping social media with fake accounts and mimicking human behavior on social media. Here, Sue underlines that WeAre8 ensures that everyone is validated and verified, so no one can be anonymous. “We are a powerful force taking tiny actions every day, and we have to use AI in the way we want. What worries me at the moment is that social media is taking us to our lowest common denominator as humans every day.”
The next part of the podcast dives into how government controls social media, taking away freedom for users. This, coupled with the prevalent of misinformation, has sown some powerful seeds of distrust and apprehension in the hearts of people. “It all comes back to fake news,” Sue observes. “In a world where everything is fake, there has to be a home and a place that we know has got us.” The prevalence of fake news in the world of social has generated a skepticism of information overall—a fact that troubles Sue as much as spurs her into action.
Sue goes on to elaborate on her experience of working in four businesses and what she hopes users will gain from her platform. “I feel deeply that everything has led to this,” smiles the entrepreneur, highlighting that through her platform, users will be gaining experiences that are tailored to their preferences and viewed on-demand.
